Studio FAQ: Barre, Strength and Mat Pilates in New York City

Studio Visits – What do I need to know?

Physique 57 has three Manhattan studios offering barre, strength, and mat Pilates classes: SoHo at 550 Broadway, NoMad at 1182 Broadway, and the Upper East Side at 14 East 60th Street (our 60th & 5th studio). Physique 57 has been teaching in New York City since 2006, and each studio offers classes seven days a week.

You can start with any format. Physique Barre is a wonderful place to begin, since it introduces the fundamentals of our method. If you prefer floor work, Physique Mat Pilates is also a great first class. If you already strength train, Physique Strength is an excellent choice, and it is one of our most popular classes.

Class begins with a dynamic warm up, upper body work with hand weights, and planks and push ups. You then move to the barre for focused thigh and seat work, followed by core work on the mat and a final stretch. Your trainer will guide every movement and offer modifications. Expect to feel muscles you may not have felt before, which is a sign your body is changing.

Yes. Physique 57 offers an introductory offer for new clients at all three NYC studios. Visit our New Client Offer page or Studio Pricing page for current offers and membership options.

Physique 57 clients typically see visible results in 8 workouts. Our method combines strength training, cardio intervals, and stretching in one class, so the body responds quickly. Class Formats

Physique 57 offers five 55 minute class formats at our SoHo, NoMad, and Upper East Side studios:

· Physique Barre: our iconic workout blending strength, dance, Pilates, and yoga in low impact, high intensity intervals.

· Physique Strength: our signature barre method with heavier weights to build strength, sculpt lean muscle, and support bone density.

· Physique Mat Pilates: an open level, core focused class to build deep core strength and improve posture.

· Physique Barre & Band: our signature barre workout with Bala Bands for added resistance and deeper muscle engagement.

· Physique Ignite: our most energizing format, pairing fast paced barre intervals with light weight sculpting.

The structure of each format stays consistent, while the exercises, variations, and playlists change every class.

Physique Strength is a strength training class that combines our signature barre method with heavier weights to build strength, sculpt lean muscle, and support bone density. It is one of our most popular classes and is offered at all three Manhattan studios in SoHo, NoMad, and the Upper East Side. Expect controlled, low impact strength work with expert coaching on form throughout.

Physique Strength is welcoming to all levels, and trainers offer modifications and weight options throughout class. Many new clients start with Physique Barre to learn the fundamentals, then add Physique Strength within the first few weeks. If you already strength train, you can start with Physique Strength right away.

Physique Mat Pilates is our open level, core focused class and a great place to start if you want to build strength without the barre. Classical Pilates principles are combined with the

precision of the Physique 57 method to build deep core strength, improve posture, and leave you feeling longer, stronger, and more balanced.

Physique 57 offers Physique Mat Pilates at all three Manhattan studios: SoHo (550 Broadway), NoMad (1182 Broadway), and the Upper East Side (14 East 60th Street). Classes are open level and taught by expert trainers who coach alignment and form throughout.

Mat Pilates can be very effective because it uses your own body weight as resistance, which demands more core control and stability. It builds deep abdominal strength, improves posture, and supports a healthy back without any equipment to learn. Many clients pair Physique Mat Pilates with barre or strength classes for a complete routine.

Physique Barre & Band adds Bala Bands to our signature barre workout for extra resistance and deeper muscle engagement, while keeping the precision of classic barre. It builds strength, stability, and endurance, and it is a natural next step once you know the fundamentals of Physique Barre.

Physique Ignite is our most energizing class, pairing fast paced barre intervals with light weight sculpting to raise your heart rate and build endurance. It remains low impact throughout, and it is a great choice for anyone who loves a vigorous, invigorating workout.

The Physique 57 Method

Barre is a low impact, high intensity workout that blends strength training, dance, Pilates, and yoga to build strength, flexibility, balance, and posture. Exercises target the core, arms, thighs, and seat with controlled movements, often using a ballet barre for support. Because barre is focused on alignment and form, it is effective for people of all ages and fitness levels. At Physique 57, barre is the foundation of our method, taught in New York City since 2006.

Barre builds long, lean, sculpted muscle while improving posture, core strength, balance, and flexibility. Physique 57 classes also combine strength and cardio intervals to build endurance and support a healthy metabolism. Weight bearing exercises support bone density, and many clients say the biggest benefit is how they feel: stronger, more confident, and more energized.

No dance experience is needed. Barre is inspired by ballet, but it is a workout, not a dance class. Your trainer cues every position and movement in real time, so there is no choreography to memorize. Every exercise can be modified, so beginners can build strength at their own pace.

Barre and Pilates share a focus on alignment, posture, control, and core strength. Pilates is traditionally done lying on a mat or on equipment such as a reformer. Barre brings many of those principles to standing work at the barre, adds higher repetitions and faster intervals, and uses hand weights, balls, and bands. Physique 57 offers both: Physique Barre and Physique Mat Pilates.

Yes. Barre is a form of strength training that builds lean muscle by working each muscle group to fatigue and then stretching it. More lean muscle supports strength, posture, bone health, and a higher resting metabolism. Barre sculpts without adding bulk. For clients who want heavier resistance, Physique Strength adds heavier weights to our signature barre method.

Interval Overload is the signature technique behind every Physique 57 class. Each muscle group is worked to fatigue through focused strength intervals, then stretched for relief, with cardio bursts throughout to keep your heart rate up. The result is a low impact, high intensity workout that builds strength, sculpts lean muscle, and improves endurance in one efficient class.

Physique 57 was founded in New York City in 2006 and is known for its signature method, Interval Overload, which combines small, precise barre movements with full body strength and cardio intervals. Our trainers complete one of the most rigorous training programs in the fitness industry, and our results are backed by a university study. Physique 57 has also earned a 5 star rating from The Fit Guide, an international rating system for fitness studios.

Goals and Results

Physique 57 is known for sculpting and toning results, with classes in SoHo, NoMad, and on the Upper East Side. Our method targets the arms, core, thighs, and seat with focused strength intervals, then stretches each muscle to create a long, lean, sculpted shape. Many clients see visible results in 8 workouts.

Yes. Barre combines strength training, cardio intervals, and stretching to build lean muscle, improve definition, and support a healthy metabolism. With consistent classes, most clients notice a firmer, more sculpted shape, better posture, and more energy. For best results, we recommend three or more classes per week.

Yes. Physique Barre uses your own body weight, light hand weights, balls, and bands to challenge muscles to fatigue, which builds tone and definition. Small, controlled movements create sustained muscle tension, so the effort is significant even when the movement is small. For clients who want heavier resistance, Physique Strength adds heavier weights.

Physique Strength at Physique 57 is designed for women who want to build real strength without high impact moves or an intimidating gym setting. The class pairs heavier weights with precise, joint friendly barre work, and trainers coach your form throughout. It is offered in SoHo, NoMad, and on the Upper East Side, and it draws clients of every age, from their 20s through their 60s and beyond.

More lean muscle supports strength, posture, bone health, and a higher resting metabolism. Barre sculpts without adding bulk. For clients who want heavier resistance, Physique Strength adds heavier weights to our signature barre method.

No. Physique Strength builds lean, sculpted muscle and definition rather than bulk. Our method pairs strength work with targeted stretching, so muscles are strengthened and lengthened in the same class. Most clients notice a firmer, more toned shape and better posture.

Weight bearing and resistance exercise are among the best ways to support bone density. Physique Strength uses heavier hand weights and full body strength work, while our barre classes add weight bearing exercise at the barre and on the mat. Together they support stronger bones as well as stronger muscles.

Yes, and it is one of the most effective ways to train. A balanced week might include two Physique Strength classes for muscle and bone health, one or two barre classes for sculpting and endurance, and a Physique Mat Pilates class for core strength and posture. Our studio team is happy to help you build a weekly plan.

We recommend at least three classes per week. Because Physique 57 combines strength, cardio, and flexibility in every class, you do not need to add separate workouts to see results. Many clients take three to six classes a week and have stayed with the method for more than 15 years because every class brings new variations and music.

Yes. In a 2010 study at the Adelphi University Human Performance Laboratory, 37 women took Physique 57 classes for four weeks. Participants lost an average of 3.1 total inches and showed a decrease in body fat alongside an increase in lean muscle at the same time. This university measured study is the basis of our visible results in 8 workouts promise. Read the study summary

Yes. The core strength, flexibility, and low impact strength work of Physique 57 help prevent injury and improve performance in running, tennis, golf, skiing, and other sports. Many clients use Physique 57 as their foundation and add the activities they love.

Women Over 40, Life Stages, and Joint Care

Women naturally begin to lose muscle mass and bone density with age, and the change often accelerates around menopause. Regular strength training helps preserve and build lean muscle, supports bone health, improves balance and posture, and helps maintain energy and metabolism. It is one of the most effective ways to stay strong, capable, and confident for the long term. Physique Strength is especially popular with women over 40 because it builds real strength through low impact, joint friendly movement with expert coaching on form.

Yes. Strength training is widely recommended during perimenopause and menopause to help maintain muscle, support bone density, and improve body composition, energy, and mood. Physique Strength offers structured, low impact strength work that respects your joints while still challenging your muscles. Always check with your doctor if you have specific health concerns.

Yes. Every Physique 57 class is low impact and high intensity, with no jumping or pounding on the joints. Low impact does not mean easy: muscles are challenged to fatigue through focused strength and cardio intervals. This makes our classes a smart choice for clients with sensitive knees, those returning to exercise, and anyone who wants results without strain.

Many clients with sensitive knees or past injuries take Physique 57 classes because the method is low impact and every exercise can be modified. Please tell your trainer about any injury or limitation before class so they can offer alternatives. If you have a current injury or health condition, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Yes. Improved posture and core strength are among the top benefits clients report. Every section of a Physique 57 class recruits the abdominals, back, and hips, and trainers coach alignment throughout. Over time, clients stand taller, feel steadier on their feet, and carry better posture into daily life.

Physique 57 was named the best prenatal workout by New York Magazine. Our low impact, form focused method helps pregnant clients stay strong and prepare for labor and delivery, and helps postnatal clients rebuild core strength after childbirth. Trainers offer prenatal and postpartum modifications in every class. Always obtain clearance from your doctor before starting or returning to exercise.
