RAISING THE BARRE: WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN INSTRUCTOR AT PHYSIQUE 57

Raising the Barre

They dance. They motivate. And they always manage to drop the perfect one-liner or piece of encouragement just when you think you can’t get through one…more…thigh…rep. Unprecedented results and incredible classes aside, if the Physique 57 brand had a secret sauce, it’d be our instructors. Here are the top 8 reasons why and how our instructors got to be THAT good. (And what keeps loyal clients, celebrities, and some of the globe’s busiest — and best — bodies coming back for more.) And trust us there are many more than 8 Top reasons our instructors are THAT good…

THE BEST OF THE BEST BEFORE THEY EVEN ARRIVE.
They are among the chosen few – Broadway professionals, Rockettes and Martha Graham-trained dancers to be specific — trained in not just entertaining, but in kinesiology, anatomy, and alignment, too. Words like “discipline” and “experience” are understatements here.

PEOPLE FIRST. PERFORMANCE SECOND
Our loyal fans and celeb clients often credit our success with hiring dynamic people that care about our clients as much as they care about being center stage during class.

THEY SHOW US WHAT THEY’RE MADE OF.
How do we select them? After a trial class, prospective instructors are invited to audition by teaching a demo class to show us what they’ve got. We hire less than 7% of people that audition to join our instructor team.

Instructor Courtney

IT’S A COMMITMENT.
Where competitors rely on weekend intensives and virtual training sessions, we require each candidate complete 200 hours of real, live training from our elite Instructor Training Team that has combined over 50 years of teaching experience.

WE TEACH THEM HOW TO TEACH.
Both you and every other person that might step into your class. That’s because not everyone learns in the same way. So new instructors are trained in both verbal and non-verbal learning styles – and are required to know how to teach visually (with inspring demonstrations of each move), auditorily (with spot-on verbal cues), with a tactile focus (up close and personal) and sentimentally (because who doesn’t love a laugh out loud story?) to maximize impact – and fun — for every single client.

Instructor Tanya

IT’S WORK. BUT IT’S SO WORTH IT.
Our instructors are evaluated on everything that makes a Physique 57 class unique and special, from learning clients’ names to keeping the class on schedule, and perpetually being evaluated on the techniques of teaching itself — from choreography and musicality, to eye contact and keeping a group class going strong while dolling out one-on-one attention and support. Hands-on corrections and feedback don’t just happen in class with you – they happen behind the scenes, too!

HEADING TOWARDS GRADUATION.
We insist that all new instructors teach and train in our studio, not only to learn the Physique 57 technique, but also to find their “voice” as instructors before they ever lead a Physique 57 class on their own. They start as Teaching Assistants, then team teach, then graduate to teaching a limited schedule before being added full-time.

THEY NEVER STOP LEARNING.
Our clients are committed to improving. And so are we. Everyone at the organization aspires to grow and learn (Physique 57 Core Value #2). But when it comes to our instructors, it’s no holds barre.
