We’re excited to continue our blog series, Client Q&A! Each month we will interview a Physique 57 client that we find inspirational. This month we are featuring Jen Rudin, an award-winning Casting Director and Owner of Jen Rudin Casting. Jen recently published her first book titled Confessions of a Casting Director. This book offers secrets from inside the audition room to help actors land any role. Read below to learn more about Jen’s book, her #1 tip to performers and more!

What is the # 1 thing you want people to take away from reading your book, Confessions of a Casting Director?

Be prepared.

What was the most meaningful experience you had while writing your book?

I spent many long hours at the New York Society Library writing the book. It’s one of the quietest places in the city (maybe the world) and I was able to focus and enjoy the writing process in that space.

When did you first fall in love with Physique 57?

When I first started taking classes in August 2012, I really noticed a difference in my abdominal strength. Plus, I live in the Ansonia, so it’s super convenient to run downstairs to the West 73rd studio for a class!

What is your favorite Physique 57 exercise?

I like seat work. I prefer clamshell over pretzel.

We noticed that you connected with Lisa Sharkey, another Physique 57 client and SVP for HarperCollins to bring your book to light. Although you didn’t specifically meet at Physique 57, have you developed any relationships by networking at the studio?

Neil Totton (an NY instructor) and I recognized each other because he auditioned for me a bunch when I was head of casting and talent development at Disney Theatrical Productions. He is a very talented dancer and has a great spirit!

As a casting director, you need a lot of patience with the process. Is that something you carry with you in other aspects of your life?

Ha! I wish. Patience is not my virtue. I do try very hard to incorporate it into other aspects of my life.

What is your #1 tip to some of our staff, many of whom are performers (dancers, actors, etc), looking to break into the business while working part time?

Your first year in the business is about networking and gaining fans. Set simple goals and manage expectations.

Besides exercise, what is your #1 tip to living a healthier lifestyle?

Life is short. Enjoy the ride.

How has Physique 57 inspired or empowered you?

Physique 57 inspires me every time I go! No one is going to do the thighs, seat and butt work for me. and if I continue to show up and work hard, I see the changes. This is similar to an actor pursuing their acting career. It takes disciple – no one can do the work for you except yourself!

Tell us about any upcoming projects or book tours. We’d love to hear any exciting news you have coming up!

I’m currently casting an animated feature called Rock Dog starring Luke Wilson. Check out www.jenrudin.com for all book events and exciting news!

Thanks again to Jen Rudin for taking the time to chat with us! We love learning more about you beyond the barre.
